May 14-16, 2010 - Josh Hayes and Team Graves Yamaha continued their winning ways w
ith a backup win on Sunday to capture the AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike trophy at the 2010 edition of the West Coast Moto Jam at Infineon Raceway’s twisty 2.32 mile road course.
Hayes had the advantage of being in the pole position at the start of the race but he soon found himself trailing several competitors who managed to pull ahead of him during the first five laps of competition. On lap six, Hayes eventually passed the Yamaha of Ben Bostrom and the Ducati of Larry Pegram to take the lead for the remaining sixteen laps. It was his ninth Superbike win.
During the post race press conference, Hayes was asked what factor most accounted for his win. He replied, “I drive a Yamaha.” He continued by saying, “I felt like I had an advantage this weekend. My bike worked really well and the crew did a fantastic job. I think we all learned a few things and it will bode well for the rest of the season. If we keep our noses cl
ean, we can compete for wins on any given weekend.”
Next up for the series will be the four mile road course at Road America on June 4-6. Visit www.amaproracing.com for more information and race results.
In a sport dominated by men since its inception in 1934, the AMA Class C record book is filled with the names of riders from Mars. Venus had never basked in the glow of victory until Saturday, May 15, 2010, when 16 year-old Elena Myers staked a claim for herself and her fellow Venusians, becoming the first female rider to capture an AMA Pro Racing win in 76 years. This significant claim to fame in Supersport Race 1 became reality after Myers won a back and forth battle with Pascarella, then O’Hara, then Beaubier and eventually Gilbert. At the conclusion of the race, Elena said “The race went really good for me, and some people made mistakes and I took
advantage of it. I’m just on another planet right now.”
The West Coast Moto Jam began Infineon’s season long salute to the Armed Forces of the United States, entitled, Sonoma Salutes Our Troops. At each major event throughout the 2010 racing season, a member of the military will be recognized with the tribute concluding on Military Appreciation Day during the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, held on August 22, 2010.
Sgt. Sevier, of the National Guard was the first to be honored and he had this to say at the conclusion of Saturday’s pre-race ceremonies, “I can’t believe they’re doing all this just for me.”
