Hot Rodding Icons featured at the 2010 Marin Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance

Story by John R . Andres/SMM Editor-in-Chief

There’s an old adage that states “when opportunity knocks, let him in”. This is exactly what Concours committee member John Nirenstein and the other organizers of the second annual Marin Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance did when they invited two very special individuals who will undoubtedly gather a significant amount of spectator attention on Sunday, the 16th of May.

Ed Iskenderian, legendary camshaft grinder and racer, along with Blackie Gejeian, car builder and custom car show promoter, both icons in the world of hot rodding, will be on hand accompanied by several of their historic and museum quality hot rods during this year’s Northern California premier automotive event, the Marin Sonoma Concours d’ Elegance, which benefits Hospice by the Bay.

This writer had the rare opportunity to conduct separate telephone interviews with these gentlemen and found both them very open and willing to share several of their past experiences and their predictions of what the future holds for the hobby of hot rodding. Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to meet and listen to how their expanding sport has progressed to its place of prominence over the last 50 years. Mr. Iskenderian will conduct a seminar in camshaft design at 11 AM at the Band Stage, and a lifetime commitment award will be presented to the “Camfather”, Andy Brizio and Blackie Gejeian at 2 PM on the Main Stage.

In the center of the Civic Center Lagoon, the automotive artistry of Roy Brizio, Rich Dore, Zane Cullen and Art Himsl will be featured along with other cars provided by The Jokers, The Saints, The Danville Dukes, and the Marin Coupe and Roadster Club.

This family friendly Concours event has something for everyone as evidenced by the variety of this year’s entries including landmark wooden speedboats along with rare and exotic classic cars of prewar and postwar vintage, each and every one considered significant vehicles that rival the quality and execution of those appearing at Pebble Beach, Hillsborough or Palo Alto.

Mark your calendars now. There’s not a better way to spend a leisurely Sunday in the hills of Marin.
