Dedication to a sport can take many forms and once in a
while it even benefits others. The folks who are members of the Historic Stock Car Racing Series (HSCRS) (http://www.hscrs.com), the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) (http://www.nasaproracing.com), and Club Auto Sport (http://www.clubautosport.net) proved that racing is more than just what it appears to be on the surface. Recently, under clear October skies, these organizations demonstrated their ability to provide an experience that included an eclectic grouping of cars ranging from street driven automobiles to full race historic NASCAR vehicles. It wasn’t a show-n-shine car show but an organized competition where winning and bragging rights meant something to those who raced and not just paraded around Infineon’s 12 turn 2.5 mile road course.
The Historic Stock Car Racing Series is a collection of race driven individuals dedicated to the restoration, preservation and continued competition of former NASCAR stock cars. They are one of the few organizations that furthers the philosophy and the
belief that their historic thoroughbreds belong on a race track and not in a museum. They understand that only in competition can these classic stock cars best be displayed for all race aficionados as a form of living history that they are ready and willing to share with those who understand the significance these vehicles have had upon the racing fabric of this country.
HSCRS is also very active in fund raising through their ROYL (Ride of Your Life) Program which over the past 15 years has raised over $200K for charities like United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay, the Boost Camp of Sonoma County, the Susan B. Komen Cancer Relief Fund and the Canary Foundation. Participants in the ROYL are treated to what the HSCRS describes as an E ticket ride in the passenger seat of one of their NASCAR vehicles at speed and on a real racetrack such as Lagu
na Seca or Infineon Raceway with the proceeds being donated to local charities. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned and judging from the reactions of those individuals who decided to cast their fate to the wind and climb into one of these race cars for a blast around the track, the price of admission was more than worth it.
NASA, founded in 1991, is dedicated to organizing and promoting racing activities for the aspiring and the accomplished racer alike and it delivers quality motorsports events to enthusiasts at racing venues across the U.S. in addition to creating programs that allow owners of both race cars and high performance street driven vehicles to enjoy the full performance capabilities of their cars in a safe and controlled environment.
HSCRS founder, John Davis, is also actively
involved in the San Jose based Club Auto Sport, a novel and unique commercial condominium car facility purpose built for racing and car enthusiasts. A successful businessman in his own right, Davis founded the Air Systems Foundation in 1984 which since its inception has raised over $2.5 million dollars targeted specifically for children's charities in Northern California.
Before long, the schedules for 2010 will be posted and the members of these organizations will once again be gearing up for another season of racing action. Check their websites for times and dates and plan on attending an event near you. Chances are you’ll become a regular.
SMM wishes to thank NASA’s Director, Jerry Kunzman and HSCRS’s John Davis for their assistance in the completion of this article.
